Monstrous Love Stories is a collection of quasi-personal stories, about heartbreak, featuring classic monsters. I came up with the idea for this project while dealing with love anxiety and watching music videos like "Thriller," and Julieta Venegas' "Limon y Sal." I was impressed with how Romance and Horror became a perfect blend. It occured to me that romance can provoke the same emotions as horror: fear, anxiety, an extreme sense of vulnerability, etc. And I started thinking about monsters as metaphors.
With this project I pushed myself to become a better storyteller, but I made it a point to improve my visual artwork too. I did the research, wrote my heart out, and edited. When it came to illustrating, I made sure to reference every figure. The hard work paid off. This book is beautiful inside and out. Most of these stories are fiction, but so much heart and honesty went into this project, it felt extremely personal and dear to me. Click here to see more.
More Ghost Stories
At this moment, I'm doing a lot of research for a much longer project. I've become obsessed with folklore, because that's were we find traces of our oldest history. Looking back at all of the ghost stories my grandmother used to tell me, I've noticed subtle hints of my ancestor's values and traditions, whichis why I have been revisiting a lot of Mexican history, mythology, and horror stories. This is my BIG project. Though I cannot say when it will be done, you can see my procress through sketches and my blog entries. I tend to take breaks between reading and writing to draw, because what I learn often inspires me to create an image. And drawing helps me understand my subject even more. As a result, you will always see me working on something new. You will find the latest updates in my blog.
"Boca del Infierno" is a collection of all the research, sketches, and short stories that have gone into my Thesis project. "Boca del Infierno", being the Spanish word for "Hellmouth is a reference to Buffy the Vampire slayer , which has kept me sane these past few months. It will be published and ready to distribute in August 2013, at the latest. Updates are included in my blog
